Suspension vs Pin Type

Suspension glass high-voltage insulators are destined for insulating and fixing wires, lightning-arrester’s cables of overhead electric transmission lines, in devices of power stations and substations for high voltages of alternating current and direct current (AC/DC) with frequency up to 100 Hz, working in regions with various degrees of pollution in atmosphere and environment temperature from +50°C to –60°NC.

Pin glass insulators are destined for insulating and fixing wires on power transmission tower with voltage from 0,4 to 10 kV of alternating current with frequency up to 100 Hz and environment temperature from +50°NC to –60°NC.

Glass vs Porcelain

The glass insulator has two great advantages compared to porcelain, first, it’s easy to visualize when it fails, because the glass bursts and therefore the absence of the insulating bell in a transmission line is noticeable, second, the conductor does not fall, due to the increase of the volume of the glass that is between the clapper and the cap, which can happen with the porcelain insulator.

Another important feature is that glass insulators have higher tensile strength than porcelain insulators.

Glass insulator types

Some are to be used in very specific conditions.

Standard Insulators: They are the most common and most used in low pollution lines.

Anti-pollution insulators: recommended for medium and high pollution areas. Its greater line of leakage allows to reduce the effects of the contamination without increasing the length of the string.

Aerodynamic Isolators: This type of insulators, due to the profile of its dielectric, totally flat, is highly recommended in desert areas since, the absence of ribs on the glass part helps to reduce the accumulation of residues on the surface of the dielectric whilst promoting the

cleaning action of the wind and rain. On the other hand, they can also be used in areas of industrial or mixed critical pollution (desert and industrial pollution).

Spherical Insulators: Like the previous model, the absence of ribs on the glass reduce the deposit of waste on the dielectric while facilitating cleaning by the effects of wind and rain. At the same time its spherical shape gives it more resistant to vandalism.
